A hidden gem in the heart of Dalmatian Hinterland, where tradition meets modern comfort

Podbablje is a municipality located on the southern side of the Imotsko Field, in the heart of the Imotska Krajina region. The name of the area comes from its position beneath Mount Baba, a hill that rises above the region and has been its recognizable symbol for centuries. Life “under Baba” has shaped the identity and traditions of this area throughout history.

The municipality consists of eight settlements: Podbablje Gornje, Poljica, Grubine, Kamenmost, Drum, Hršćevani, Krivodol, and Ivanbegovina. Each of these settlements preserves a part of the rich history, cultural heritage, and traditional way of life that has been passed down through generations.

One of Podbablje’s most interesting landmarks is the ancient Roman road Salona–Narona, which passed through this area, specifically through the settlement of Drum. The village developed due to its proximity to this important route. Traces of the Roman presence can still be seen in the archaeological remains of former buildings along the Vrljika River, as well as in an inscription mentioning the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, which was once built into the stone bridge.

Among the best-known attractions are the old stone bridge in Kamenmost, from which the settlement takes its name, the historic Church of Saint Luke dating back to 1705, numerous traditional watermills along the Vrljika River, and the authentic rural architecture found in Poljica. Nature lovers will enjoy the landscape, vineyards, fertile fields, and beautiful views of Imotsko Field and the surrounding hills.

Podbablje is a place where natural beauty, rich history, and the hospitality of local people come together. Nestled under the protection of Mount Baba and enriched by traces of Roman civilization, it represents one of the most beautiful and authentic parts of Imotska Krajina, preserving its traditions and identity through the centuries.
