Makarska riviera

Makarska is one of the most famous towns on the Croatian Adriatic coast and an important center of southern Dalmatia.

It is located in a naturally protected harbor between the Osejava and St. Peter peninsulas, at the foot of Mount Biokovo. Due to its location, Makarska is the center of the Makarska coastal region, known as the famous Makarska Riviera, which stretches from Brela to Gradac. The town has nearly 14,000 inhabitants and, after Split, represents one of the most important economic and social centers of central Dalmatia.

The origin of the name Makarska has not been fully explained, and one interesting theory connects it with the Phoenician word for purple, a precious color once obtained from sea snails. The special beauty of the town comes from the unique combination of the towering Biokovo mountain and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea. This part of the coast is home to some of the most beautiful pebble beaches in Croatia, attracting large numbers of domestic and international visitors every year.

Makarska has a pleasant Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny summers and mild winters, making it a popular tourist destination throughout much of the year. In addition to its natural beauty, the town is known for its lively waterfront promenade, rich gastronomic offer, and numerous cultural and entertainment events.

Thanks to its proximity to Imotski, many residents and visitors from the Imotski region travel to Makarska during the summer for swimming, relaxation, and enjoying the sea. On the other hand, many tourists staying in Makarska enjoy visiting Imotski to explore natural attractions such as Red Lake and Blue Lake and discover the rich cultural heritage of the inland region.

This connection between the coast and the hinterland contributes to the diverse tourist offer of the entire area. Makarska is therefore an unmissable destination that successfully combines natural beauty, history, and modern tourism.
