Međugorje

Međugorje is a small village in the Municipality of Čitluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has become one of the world's most renowned Catholic pilgrimage destinations.
It gained international recognition after the events of 1981, when six young people reported an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Podbrdo Hill. Since then, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world have travelled to Međugorje each year to participate in prayer and religious celebrations. The spiritual heart of the village is the Church of St. James, where large numbers of faithful gather throughout the year.
Among the most visited pilgrimage sites are Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) and Cross Mountain (Križevac), where pilgrims pray the Rosary and walk the Stations of the Cross. The messages associated with the Međugorje apparitions emphasize the importance of peace, prayer, conversion, fasting, and participation in the Eucharist. Međugorje is also known for the large number of confessions and the international atmosphere that characterizes the pilgrimage season.
One of the most significant annual events is Mladifest (the International Youth Festival), which brings together tens of thousands of young people from across the globe. The festival programme includes Holy Mass, catechesis, Eucharistic adoration, personal testimonies, and communal prayer in multiple languages. The alleged apparitions have not been officially recognized as supernatural, although in 2024 the Vatican approved public devotion associated with Međugorje. Over the years, the village has been visited by numerous well-known believers, priests, and public figures, and it is also the birthplace of celebrated Croatian tennis player Marin Čilić.
Today, Međugorje is regarded as one of Europe's most important Marian pilgrimage sites and a symbol of prayer, hope, and spiritual unity for millions of people worldwide.
